Why Purpose is Important

Life is rather meaningless without God. Solomon states in the book of Ecclesiastes, “Meaningless! Meaningless! Everything is meaningless. What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun?” After 12 chapters of lamenting, he concludes by saying “Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man.” Jesus himself reduces the commandments down to this: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ This is the first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

Do you love God? This is an important question. Your ability to discover your God-given purpose hinges on it. If you hesitate here, it probably isn’t that you don’t love God enough, but rather you don’t realize how much God loves you. He sacrificed his son for you. Let that truth sink in. When you truly love God with all your heart, soul and mind, it naturally follows that you will want to serve Him. It’s through service to Him that love for neighbor manifests, and that is where your purpose lies. Serve God and your life will be full of joy, not toil, doing what He planned for you from the very beginning.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Take the Spiritual Gifts Survey at What are your top three spiritual gifts? Your gifts don’t just have one application. They can be used across the board in many aspects of your life. Where are you currently using your gifts?

  2. Read Colossians 3:23-25. It’s not about you. Or your boss. Or your family. How would your day be different if you woke up every morning looking to serve God first?

  3. 1 John 4:19 says, “We love each other because he first loved us.” All love in the world stems from God, which is why people say life is meaningless without God. Love brings meaning. What is your passion and how can you use it to love others? You get extra points if you have a photo.

  4. Read Romans 12:6-13. God has blessed you with gifts. When you use your gifts you have purpose. Your energy, passion, and focus increases. What were you doing the last time you felt really energized and focused? The thing you just said. You should be doing more of that.
